(AP) – Israeli warplanes bombed Syria on Sunday, striking what the military called an Islamic Jihad training base in retaliation for a suicide bombing at a Haifa restaurant. It was the first Israeli attack deep inside Syrian territory in three decades. The U.N. Security Council called an emergency meeting after Syria complained to Secretary-General Kofi Annan, a U.N. diplomat said.

Sunday’s strike came hours before the start at sundown of Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, and on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the joint Syrian-Egyptian attack against Israel in 1973. It was believed to be the first Israeli operation on Syrian soil since that war, though in 1985 Israeli warplanes flying over Lebanon pursued Syrian fighters into Syrian airspace and shot them down.
